^{(The Bauk is an old mythical creature from Slavic folklore. Rather than making up an original species, this is more what I think one should be like)}

Bauks are evil, malevolent spirits that saunter through the darkness - Some say they were bad and brutal people back when they were alive, but suffered a sudden and painful death in the end. From that point, they turned into restless ghosts - driven by fury and revenge, they began wandering through many different places, trying to find a poor soul to feed on. However, since they weren't lucky enough to find a human soul to eat, they moved onto something... similar. The Bauk usually possesses bears and lynxes, sometimes wolves, rarely smaller animals like foxes. For the animals, the spirit is like some sort of virus~ it spreads through their body and infects healthy cells. Slowly, they begin losing control over their motions, and after the spirit infects their brain, they die. The Bauk's magic, however, keeps the carcass alive and the spirit gradually begins merging with it. On the outside, the Bauk may seem like a normal animal, but unlike the actual animal, it craves bloodshed and sometimes, human flesh. If the Bauk manages to gain enough power through its meals, its magic allows it to take form of a human. They still have certain animalistic features, but upon reaching their 'human' form, their powers weaken - the only possibility to keep their abilities is to find a regular human who is willing to 'feed' them once in a while. In exchange, the Bauk guarantees to protect the human with all its powers.

In this state, the Bauk is immortal and invulnerable. However, if the human suffers from wounds, the same wounds will also appear on the Bauk's body - if the human dies, the Bauk does too. When the contract is sealed, there is no turning back - Neither the human nor its Bauk can step out of it.

It is said that some young women who die in childbirth attract Bauks since the spirits can easily win the newborns' confidence and then chain them to themselves for a lifetime. The mothers, in return, know their child will be taken care of for the rest of their lives by a spirit-guardian. A gruesome deal, but what has a dying mother left to lose?

- the remaining animal ears are usually hidden; they don't have any specific function, since the Bauk uses its human ears to hear
- after finding a human to feed from, they behave like any other human would ; they don't leave their partner and develop a strong bond
